Recent KOSBE Award Winner Dykes Trucking Receives TDOT Certification

December 15, 2011

KINGSPORT, Tenn.KOSBE Award Winner, Dykes Trucking has been certified as a Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) by the Small Business Development Program (SBDP).

The Department's DBE program is intended to ensure nondiscrimination in the award and administration of DOT-assisted contracts in the Department's highway, transit, airport and highway safety financial assistance programs. This ensure a "level playing field" in which DBEs can compete fairly for DOT-assisted contracts, improve the flexibility and efficiency of the DBE program and reduce burdens on small businesses.

“We were thrilled to achieve our TDOT certification,” said owner, Kim Dykes. “This will make us eligible to compete in millions of dollars of Tennessee contracts for trucking services awarded through the TDOT DBE Program.”

“Our phone has been ringing off the hook for bids and we couldn’t have accomplished this without the assistance and continued support from KOSBE,” noted Dykes. “They walked us through the step-by-step process and helped us assemble our documentation and it didn’t cost us a thing.”

Dykes started her family-owned and operated, freight trucking company in 2009, with two customers. Now, she has 31 customers, 11 dump trucks and 10 drivers.

Dykes hauls asphalt, salt, rocks, dirt, clay and anything that can fit in the back of their trucks.

Now with a contractor’s license and certification in hand, future plans include purchasing more equipment and hiring a crew for paving concrete/asphalt and sodding.

Dykes Trucking was the Runner-Up for the Business Excellence Award for 10 Employees and Up in the 2011 Annual KOSBE Awards.

Hours of operation are Monday to Friday 8 a.m. — 5 p.m.

Visit them at their Kingsport location at 1019 Moreland Drive or in Fall Branch located at 1714 Highway 93, Suite 12.

To be eligible for the DBE program, persons must own 51% or more of a "small business," establish that they are disadvantaged within the meaning of DOT regulations and prove they control their business.

The Department presumes certain groups are disadvantaged, including women, Black Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, Asian-Pacific Americans, Subcontinent Asian-Pacific Americans, or other minorities found to be disadvantaged by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Persons who are not members of one of the above groups and own and control their business may also be eligible if they establish their "social" and "economic" disadvantage.

It is the intent of KOSBE to be the go-to organization in the Tri-Cities for small business owners and entrepreneurs who want to start or grow their businesses, by creating and developing the right tools and resources and cultivating the right partnerships.
